It’s only when you embark on a low-carbohydrate lifestyle that you truly realize how much you miss the occasional bread, whether as a side to your main meal or as the primary vehicle for it. This was certainly something I was experiencing with my evening meals.
Recently, I’ve been trying to reduce my saturated fat intake, which has meant incorporating a lot of fish into my diet. However, there’s a limit to how much fish you can eat with vegetables before it starts to feel a bit monotonous and, frankly, a little uninspired. I was beginning to feel this despite actively increasing the variety of fish I was consuming.
I decided to try the Heylo starter pack, which included a range of different bread items. Among them was a four-pack of these flatbreads, and I honestly couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw how generously sized each flatbread was for a relatively low net carbohydrate count.
Upon reviewing the ingredients, most were familiar to me. I’ve been incorporating a lot of flaxseed into my diet recently, as it’s an excellent substitute for flour. I wasn’t surprised to see it forming a major part of the ingredients here, which is incredibly beneficial for me as I’m also actively trying to increase my fibre intake.
This flatbread, in texture, was quite pita-like. So, I toasted it and then, after cutting it in half, easily split it down the middle to create a pocket. It toasted just like regular bread! Inside, I added a little Benecol to boost my polyunsaturated fats, followed by a tiny bit of low-fat mayonnaise, shredded lettuce, and a medley of air-fried fish.
It’s hard to explain just how incredible this tasted and how incredibly filling it was. I was accustomed to finishing a meal and still feeling somewhat empty, which I was okay with. However, with the addition of this bread item, which easily fits within my keto macros, my satiety was absolutely maximized. So much so, I was actually concerned about what the scales would read in the morning, as I felt incredibly full.
